ABIS builds progressive stamping dies for sheet metal parts ranging from 0.1mm to 6.0mm in thickness, running on presses from 45T to 300T. Our die mold engineering team uses SolidWorks and AutoCAD to complete 3D die structure design, strip layout optimization, and DFM review before any steel is cut. For automotive part progressive stamping projects that require tight tolerances on formed features, we run forming simulation to verify material flow and springback compensation at the design stage. This reduces tryout iterations significantly and shortens the overall lead time for first article approval.
How Progressive Stamping Works for Auto Parts
In a progressive stamping die, a coil of sheet metal feeds through a series of stations inside a single tool. Each station performs one operation - punching, bending, drawing, or trimming - and the strip advances by a fixed pitch after every press stroke. By the time the strip reaches the last station, the finished part separates from the carrier. This is what makes the progressive stamping process so efficient for high-volume automotive components: one press cycle, one complete part, no manual transfer between operations. The number of stations typically ranges from 5 to over 30, depending on part complexity. For a simple bracket it might be 8 stations; for a multi-bend connector terminal with in-die tapping progressive stamping die, it could exceed 20.

Progressive Die vs. Single Die - When to Choose Which
A single stamping die performs one operation per stroke and suits low-to-medium volumes or geometries that can be formed in one hit. A progressive die combines multiple operations into a continuous tool and is the preferred choice when annual volumes exceed 100K pieces or when the part has features that require sequential forming. The upfront tooling investment for a progressive mold is higher, but the per-piece cost drops sharply because cycle times are shorter and labor input is minimal. For automotive programs with 500K+ annual volumes, progressive dies almost always deliver the lowest total cost of ownership.
