Rapid prototype tooling is an accelerated manufacturing process that creates injection molds, dies, or tooling inserts within days rather than weeks-enabling engineers to produce functional plastic parts using production-grade materials before committing to full-scale tooling investment. Unlike 3D printed prototypes, rapid prototype tooling delivers parts with identical material properties, surface finish, and dimensional accuracy to final production components.

 

Two primary methods exist:

  • Direct Tooling: CNC machining or metal 3D printing creates the mold directly from CAD data-ideal for quick design validation (typically 50-5,000 shots)
  • Indirect Tooling: A master pattern produces multiple molds for material testing and iterative refinement
