What is a hot runner

ABIS Mold Technology Co.,Ltd Updated: Oct 19, 2018

                               What is a hot runner?

The hot runner is a way to keep the plastic in the runner and the gate molten by heating. As there are heating rods and heating rings near the flow passage or in the center, the entire flow passage from the injection molding machine nozzle to the gate is in a high temperature state, so that the plastics in the flow passage remain molten. After stopping the machine, it is generally not necessary to open the flow passage to take out the condensate. Therefore, the hot channel process is sometimes referred to as a hot collector system, or non - flow molding.Advantages and disadvantages of hot runner technology compared with conventional cold runner technology have the following advantages:

1. Save raw materials and reduce them into.

2. Shorten the molding cycle and improve the machine efficiency

3. Improve product surface quality and mechanical properties.

4. The point gate can be used without a three-plate mold.

5. Side gate can be economically formed into individual products.

6. Improve the degree of automation.

7. Use needle valve sprue to control sprue frosting.

8. The quality of the injection parts of the multi-cavity mold is consistent.

9. Improve the appearance of injection molded products.

However, every technology has its own disadvantages, and hot runner technology is no exception:

1. Complex mold structure, high cost and high maintenance cost.

2. It takes a period of time for the process to be stable to start up, resulting in a large amount of waste.

3. In case of melt leakage and failure of heating elements, the product quality and production schedule are greatly affected.

The third disadvantage above can be reduced by purchasing high-quality heating elements, hot runner plates and nozzles and maintaining them carefully when used.
